The K9 NERO Practical training focuses on hands-on skills necessary for handling injured animals, specifically police K9s.  Completing the classroom component (PRODIGYEMS) and this practical component fulfills the K9 NERO training (OEMS) requirement.

 

  • During the practical session, EMTs demonstrate the following skills:
    • Appropriate assessment, restraint (muzzling), and low-stress handling of injured animals.
    • Identifying relevant anatomic structures in police K9s and differences from human anatomy.
    • Performing a physical exam on non-police dog canines, including trauma assessment.
    • Checking vital signs and assessing for life-threatening bleeding.
    • Managing airway obstructions and performing basic life support maneuvers.

 

  • EMTs must have a certificate of completion for the didactic training in order to attend the practical session.

 

*** PRIDEStar/Trinity EMS staff must complete the K9 NERO PRODIGYEMS online training prior to attending this class ***
