ALS IFT DAY ONE (PRIDEStar/Trinity EMS Employees ONLY)

This is a five hour course course required by MA OEMS and NH BEMS. It is offered at various times throughout the year.  

(1)  It is MANDATORY for new AEMTs and Paramedics within 90 days of hire. 

(2)  It is MANDATORY for current AEMTs and Paramedics every two years.   

Nine hours total class time (IFT & VENT).  ALS Staff must attend both days.

 

PURPOSE:

Is to teach current employees the requirements for safe and effective ALS Interfacilty transport in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, as required by Appendix A1 of the Massachusetts Statewide Treatment Protocols and the NH IFT protocol 7.3.

 

GOALS:

I. By the end of the course the candidate shall be capable of demonstrating a thorough understanding of the following aspects of MA & NH ALS Interfacility Transport:

1. MA OEMS and NH BEMS Policies and Procedures for ALS IFT;

2. Applicable Federal Statutes (EMTALA/COBRA);

3. Roles and Responsibilities of NREMTP during ALS Transfer;

4. Roles and Responsibilities of Medical Control physician;

5. Communication procedures & protocols;

6. Procedure for obtaining patient information prior to transport;

7. Sources of data for patient transfer;

8. Patient Assessment prior to transfer;

9. Understanding & Interpreting Lab Values

10. Utilizing Medical Control;

11. Common IFT Medications: Indications, Contraindications, Route, Dose, Technique of Administration for all medications listed on OEMS/DPH and NH BEMS approved IFT medication list

 

II. Understanding all supplemental equipment approved for use under MA OEMS & NH BEMS IFT guidelines:

1. ZOLL Transport Ventilatior (Covered in Day two);

2. Chest Tubes, Drainage Devices;

3. Central Venous/Arterial Catheters;

4. PIC Lines;

5. Femoral Sheaths;

6. Infusion Pumps;

7. NG tubes, Feeding Tubes;

8. Bladder Irrigation;

9. Internal Pacemakers.

 

III. Demonstration of skill competency using the equipment approved for use under MA OEMS & NH BEMS IFT guidelines;

 

 

iv. Demonstrates troubleshooting capability with equipment approved for use under MA OEMS & NH BEMS IFT guidelines;

 

 

v. Procedure for transferring care at receiving hospital;

 

 

vi. Procedure for providing report to staff at receiving hospital;

 

 

vii. Procedure for patient care documentation following IFT;

 

 

viii. Understand the QA/QI Process involved in IFT
